Paath

Prior to Guru Nanak Dev Ji the word 'Paath' was extensively used in the Hindu Dharam. To this day, Hindu Dharam still uses this word.

The word 'Paath' is now loving and widely used in the Sikh Dharam to mean "Sacred Reading". It is often used as a 'pre' or 'post' fix ( e.g. Kulla Paath, Akhand Paaath, Sukhmani Paath, Paath Karna etc. )

Is 'Paath' really part of the Sikh Dharam ?
Is 'Paath' the true method for our salvation ?
What instructions are given in Guru Granth Ji ?

Throughout the Guru Granth Ji there are approximately 22 references to the word 'Paath'. Below are a few of these occurances :

From the quotations above it is quite evident that 'Paath' engrosses us into 'Karam Kaand' and, instead of controlling, it excites our egoism.

Guru Granth Ji guides us from all forms of 'wasteful thought' and teaches us to take the path of Naam Japna ( meditation of Naam ) :

All of the Sabads above commend the meditation of Naam.

All references to "reading of Gian" specifically instructs us to "read, study and research" the Gian NOT read repeatedly, ritually and/or in parrot fashion.

The question we must ask ourselves is, "What have we learnt from the Sabads above ?".

Should we continue idol worship, affliations with sects, ritualised reading and worship of scriptures or should we study the Gian with the intention to encourage our minds to meditate on Naam ?
